What to wear and bring for your course or activity

All our activities take place on the water, which means at the minimum your feet and hands will get wet. You will also likely get splashed by the water as you paddle, and in kayaks the seat can get wet too. For paddleboarding you will almost certainly end up in the water at some point! So, come wearing appropriate sport or paddling clothing to keep you warm and dry on and off the water. (Spare layers are fine too as we will provide dry bags to store kit in).

For all our activities we would ask you to please bring the following:

In warm weather
  • Basic sportswear e.g. shorts and t-shirt. It’s sensible to bring a spare fleece top in case it gets colder than expected. On hot days bring sun screen, sunglasses, and a sun hat is a good idea.

If it’s cold/rainy
  • A fleece top and tracksuit type trousers (jeans, hoodies and anything made from cotton is unsuitable, as they hold a lot of water). A warm hat is a good idea for cold days. Waterproofs are useful if you have them.

In colder months
  • From November through to May a full drysuit (not separate top and bottom) plus thermal base layers, or a winter wetsuit (minimum 4mm thickness) is essential to reduce the risk of hypothermia, plus dry socks or thick neoprene socks. Helmets will help keep your head warm and you can wear a synthetic or neoprene beanie underneath. Neoprene gloves or pogies can be useful, plus a pair of gloves to keep in your dry bag. For safety reasons you will not be permitted to paddle without suitable clothing, so please contact us in advance if you are unsure.

In all weather
  • You must wear footwear, they must stay on in the water so flip-flops and crocs are unsuitable. Your footwear needs to have a sturdy sole as you may need to walk on rocks, pebbles or sand to get on/off the water. Old trainers or neoprene wetshoes with rubber soles are ideal.

  • If you want to bring a phone or camera onto the water, we recommend using a waterproof pouch (to protect your device from sea water) with a lanyard (so you can attach it to your buoyancy aid to prevent it falling in the water!)

  • A waterproof bag to bring spare layers, snacks, food or other items. We provide dry bags for spare clothes and food whilst out on the water.

  • A towel and a complete change of clothing (and shoes) are required for everyone! Change robes are ideal too. Usually we will start and end our activities where public toilets are available nearby, however we cannot guarantee this, or that the facilities will be open.

  • Wetsuits are not essential, but if you have one they can be useful, especially when it’s slightly chilly, and for paddle boarding when it’s more likely you will be in and out of the water. Wetsuit hire is included in the price of all our summer stand up paddleboarding activities.

  • We provide buoyancy aids (compulsory for all our activities), helmets, waterproof tops (cags) if needed, and all necessary paddling equipment

  • Bring a carrier bag or two to put wet clothes/shoes into after the session

  • Payment for car parking – some car parks are free to use but most are chargeable, with cash and app (Pay by Phone) being the most common payment methods

Summer Wetsuit hire
  • Wetsuit hire is available at an additional cost for all our summer activities, on a first come, first served basis. These are £6 for taster sessions, and £10 for everything else. Wetsuits are sanitised in between uses, and customers must wear underwear or a base layer too.

Food & Snacks
  • We often stop for a short break mid-session, so it is worth bringing a snack and drink for all activities. Our buoyancy aids have pockets in so you can stash a snack bar or 2!

  • If your activity lasts all day, we may stop for lunch some distance from the start/end point such as on a secluded beach or cove, so please bring a packed lunch and drink with you.

Other items
  • If you wear glasses or sunglasses, we suggest you secure them with neoprene spec-bands.

If you are unsure of what to bring or if you have any questions please get in touch!
